A giant, green anaconda.
Head raised, tongue flicking, the snake fixed its eyes on the monkey. Nick's blood ran cold. Time stood still. A scene from Predator raced through his head.
Lightning fast, the gargantuan snake uncoiled and pounced. It wrapped itself around the monkey. Once, twice. The monkey disappeared beneath the muscled scales.
Madison screamed and ran to help.
"No!" Nick grabbed her hoodie and pulled her back.
"It's going to kill him!" she screamed. "It's going to squash him!"
That massive snake could eat all three of them. Crush them to death. First the monkey, then Madison, then Nick. It could swallow them in turn and throw them up to make room for another. Save all three bodies to eat at its leisure.
In seconds, all Nick could see of the monkey was its little furry feet. The gleaming coils tightened. The anaconda was squeezing the monkey to death.
"Make it stop!" Madison begged. "Nick! Make it stop!"
Nick ran forward. Staying well away from the snake's head, he tried to uncoil the thick, muscled beast. He couldn't. The snake only tightened its grip. Twenty feet of undulating coils. There was no way he could unwind the monster.
The monkey had stopped struggling. The anaconda was killing it before their eyes. Nick thought, frantically. Surfers knew what to do in a shark attack. Strike the gills. Jab your fingers in the shark's eyes. Would it work with an anaconda? Only one way to find out.
Standing behind the anaconda, he gripped its head and jammed his thumbs into the snake's eyes. With a shout, he pushed with all his strength.
The anaconda reacted immediately. It reared back. As its coils loosened, Nick grabbed the limp monkey and pulled hard.
He retreated up the trail shouting, "Run!" Fast. Puffing. Triumphant.
"You saved him!" Madison screamed, sprinting alongside him. "You saved him!"
When they finally paused for breath, she stroked the monkey and murmured, "It's okay now, baby. You're safe, baby."
The monkey stirred and opened its big, round eyes.
An Indian girl came hurtling down the trail, braided hair flying. "You find!" she shouted. "You find Hermano Mono!"
"We saved him from a big snake," Madison said.
"You save him? Gracias!" The girl claimed the monkey from Nick's arms and began petting him. "Gracias!"
"Hola!" Nick said grinning. "It was nothing."
All at once, everything was better. Here was someone who clearly wasn't a pirate. The Indian girl must come from the village they'd seen from the river. She wore a frayed, brightly-patterned skirt and a mud-stained, orange T-shirt. Leopard-like spots had been inked along her arms. On her cheekbones, black triangles were etched in rows. White feathers shone in her ebony braids. Standing as tall as Nick, she studied him with dark, slanting eyes.
"Where you come from?" she asked. "Where you go?"
Nick struggled to remember some Spanish but couldn't think of another word. "We're lost."
The girl shook her head and looked puzzled.
Nick pointed at the monkey. "Your monkey?"
"Si." The girl smiled shyly. "Hermano Mono. Brother monkey"
"Oh!" Madison cried. "I wish I had a monkey."
"Si!" the girl said. "Why you here?"
"We are lost.
